What is a swage button ferrule?
Wire rope is terminated in many different ways. One way is to swage a button (also known as a ferrule or dead end or knob) on the end of the wire rope. This termination can be used to seize the rope, hold the end in a slot where there is no direct load (like on a drum in a winch or equipment), or used for a direct load.
Before you start swaging a button ferrule
Only trained, competent professionals should make only make rigging to terminate wire rope. It is important to understand the button and wire rope manufacture’s warnings and instructions. Many button manufacturers, including Muncy, base their ratings on using certain wire rope constructions. Know which after swage dimensions your customer and the fittings manufacturer require, including any applicable tolerances.
Best practice for swage button ferrules
Rigging shops and their customers, the end users, often ask whether the wire rope should stick out the end of the button. The wire rope should should extend 1/2 to 1 time the wire rope diameter before swaging. This allows the button to swage with wire rope along the entire inside diameter. Wire rope can be cut at an angle. If the rope does not stick out of the button, and the wire rope is cut unevenly, the assembly may lose strength and efficiency if the inside diameter doesn’t have the entire wire rope
swaged. Some end users may not want sharp wires extending out of the button and for the wires to be trimmed away. This practice is fine, being careful to not grind or cut the button while trimming or grinding the wire.
